But how we achieve those goals today looks very different from what was considered standard care even fifteen years ago.
THE TRADITIONAL APPROACH AND ITS LIMITATIONS
When veneer techniques were first widely adopted, the process required significant tooth reduction. Teeth were prepared by drilling them down substantially — often into peg-like shapes — before the veneer could be bonded over them. This wasn’t a shortcut or a flaw in technique; it was a necessity dictated by the material science of the time.
Ceramic and composite materials required a minimum thickness of approximately 1.0 to 1.2 mm to be structurally durable enough to withstand the forces of daily function. While the aesthetic outcomes were often excellent, the approach came at a real cost: the irreversible destruction of healthy tooth enamel.
Once enamel is removed, it cannot be regenerated. A tooth that has been aggressively prepared has, in effect, been committed to restorations for life — and every restoration has a finite lifespan.
Think of it this way: the mouth is a dynamic, high-load mechanical environment. The upper and lower teeth are in constant contact — biting, chewing, and functioning throughout the day. Like any machine, the components of that system will eventually wear.

At that thickness, a veneer can be bonded directly to intact enamel without any meaningful preparation in many cases. The patient leaves with a transformed smile and their natural tooth structure fully preserved.
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND OUR RESULTS
At Clarence Street Dental Group, we have invested in a fully digital, in-house workflow that gives our patients both precision and choice.
Every smile design begins with high-resolution SLR photography and digital planning in ExoCAD, an industry-leading CAD/CAM software platform. This allows us to design your smile virtually — mapping out the exact shape, proportion, and contour of each veneer before a single restoration is fabricated.
Once the design is finalized, fabrication is carried out in-house using two advanced manufacturing methods:
- 3D Printing via the SprintRay PRO-2 and MIDAS printers, capable of producing highly accurate resin veneers with excellent surface quality.
- Five-Axis Milling via the Dymac DS1, which mills veneers from ceramic blocks with exceptional precision and strength.
This gives our patients meaningful options. Depending on clinical goals and individual preference, veneers can be produced in high-quality 3D-printed resins or in full ceramic — each material offering distinct aesthetic and functional properties.
